5 Tips For Running In The Summer Heat
Summer is finally here, which means longer days and warmer temps. There is definitely something about the summer air that gets many of us off the couch and into our running shoes. However, from either too much fun, to too much sun, there are plenty of reasons that can sometimes keep us from enjoying summer running. But don’t worry, as XS™ Sports Nutrition has you covered with 5 easy tips to keep you from falling into the running slump, and to stay cool on your runs this summer.
  1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
Keep yourself going by upping your fluid intake. Electrolyte drinks beat water because they help to increase your water absorption rate and replace the electrolytes you lose through sweat. Remember to drink sufficient fluids before, during and after your run, to help prevent dehydration. If you need help finding an electrolyte drink, check out the XS Sports Nutrition hydrate range for the perfect electrolyte formula to help keep you well hydrated this summer.
  2. Sort Out The Outfit
When running outdoors it is important to wear light coloured clothes which are light in weight and may have vents or use mesh. The right clothing will allow your skin to breathe, helping to keep you feeling cool when running. Cotton made fabrics are a NO as they do not breathe well and become drenched and heavy as you sweat…and nobody wants that!
  3. Don’t Forget the Sunscreen
The sun can impact not only your running performance but can also put your skin at risk too. That is why it is important to apply your SUN TIME® SPF50 sunscreen around 20 minutes before you head out the door. Even on cloudy days, sunscreen is crucial as harmful UVA/UVB rays are not blocked by cloud cover.
  4. Run Early Or Late
Summer is here and the days are longer, which means running early in the morning or later in the night is possible. Running first thing in the morning can set you up nicely for the rest of the day as it is over and done with and the sun has not heated up, so the temperature is a lot cooler. If you’re not a morning person, wait for the evening when the sun is setting.
  5. Go Off Track
Mix up your running routine on particularly sunny days and try to find shady routes in parks, or enjoy the sea breeze and run along the beach. Not only is off-roading a great way to mix up your runs, but it helps to make them more enjoyable, with new sites to be explored.
  6. Most importantly don’t forget to make the most of the warmer months and enjoy your running. Run free and explore new routes in the sunshine, running along the beach, or simply enjoy those quiet summer mornings and beautiful sunrises.
